SOLD OUT: Symposium Threads of Innovation

During the Threads of Innovation symposium, we reflect on four years of research and development (R&D) in our TextielLab. On Monday 2 December, we celebrate the transformative power of textile innovation, which uniquely combines craftsmanship and technology. Find inspiration from high-profile projects, listen to leading experts and discover the future of textiles.

From sustainable practices to digital advances, this symposium offers a unique opportunity to connect, learn and become part of the ongoing revolution in the textile industry. Dieter van den Storm of MAD Brussels will moderate the Threads of Innovation plenary session. The programme is still evolving, but meet some of the speakers here below:

Henrik Vibskov is a renowned fashion designer and multidisciplinary artist, known for his innovative approach to textiles and fashion. A key figure in contemporary fashion, Vibskov pushes the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship through experimental designs and bold patterns. With his unique perspective, he has contributed to numerous creative projects combining art and fashion. During Threads of Innovation, Henrik will share insights from his creative R&D process and explore how he combines unconventional materials and techniques.

Otobong Nkanga is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans performance, drawing, photography and textile art. As a mentor of the Advanced Textile Programme (ATP), she brings her extensive experience and unique perspective to the participants. Nkanga will participate in conversations with ATP participants, sharing her expertise and guiding them through their creative processes. Through her mentorship, she aims to inspire new ways of thinking about textiles, materials and the stories they carry.

DRIFT is a cutting-edge design studio founded by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta and is known for their innovative approach to art and technology. The studio combines nature and technology in mesmerising installations and sculptures that challenge the boundaries of art. During Threads of Innovation, DRIFT will discuss their creative process and provide insight into how they integrate materials, technology and design.

Hebe Verstappen is the Head of the TextielLab. With a background in the making industry and training in art history, design and education, Hebe knows about making processes in relation to today's creative industry. She sets out the vision and policies of the TextielLab and connects makers, education and knowledge partners, the industry and the capabilities of the TextielMuseum and the TextielLab.

Pick your programme

After the morning plenary session led by Dieter van den Storm, you can enjoy a delicious lunch buffet provided by food designer Eylien Lommen of LEF (Let's Explore Food) from 12.00 onwards.

Also opening at that time is the pick-your-programme part of the day, for which you can put together your own schedule. Scattered throughout the museum and the TextielLab, you will find various sessions, demos and fascinating talks on topics such as weaving, knitting, passement, sustainability and much more. We will also present the final results of the Advanced Textile Program (ATP) from 14:00 to 15:30. 

Do not miss the chance to visit the new exhibition  'SHAPE – body, fashion, identity' or the expo's 'Secrets of making #4' and 'Designed to dry – Kitty van der Mijll Dekker X Vera Roggli', that highlight different facets of craftsmanship and design.

Of course, we will end the day together with an informal networking reception, where you will have the perfect opportunity to interact with other participants and experts.
