Meet the maker - Makers on materials

On Sunday afternoon 21 April, we are pleased to invite you to Meet the maker during the opening weekend of Makers on materials. During Meet the maker, you will meet interdisciplinary artist Asli Hatipoglu, who was commissioned by the TextielMuseum to develop the multifaceted work Bombyx Mori. During Meet the maker, Asli will perform Sárikos: a 20-minute performance in which she takes on the skin of the silkworm species 'Bomyx Mori'.

The live performance is a multi-sensory experience and will be performed together with dancer and choreographer Alyssa Gersony. Also during Meet the maker, you can watch a film on Bombyx Mori developed for the exhibition. The film features Asli Hatipoglu, weaving product developer Marjan van Oeffelt and curator Suzan Rüsseler. All explain Asli's personal motivations, the concept behind Bombyx Mori, the development of the making process in the TextielLab and the final result that can be seen during 'Makers on materials'. Come along on Sunday afternoon, be amazed and Meet the maker!

Collection commission Bombyx Mori

In 2023, interdisciplinary artist Asli Hatipoglu was commissioned by the TextielMuseum to develop a work at the TextielLab called Bombyx Mori. For this, she researched the past, present and speculative future of the domesticated silkworm species Bombyx Mori. Asli is interested in the relationship between humans and non-human creatures. In this work, she was keen to show the life behind the material silk. She translated the results of her research into an installation, consisting of a woven cloth developed at the TextielLab together with product developer weaving Marjan van Oeffelt, a film projection, a documentary and a performance with three accompanying 'costumes'.

Performance Sérikós / Séres

For the performance titled Séres (ancient Greek word for silk), Asli partnered with dancer/choreographer Alyssa Gersony. In this performance - which is accompanied by a spoken essay - the two coauthors reflect on the life of this completely human-dependent silkworm whose life is in the service of maximising silk production. In doing so, they move inside the silkworm, in its limited vision and freedom of movement, studying silk cocoons, silk yarn and silkworms up close. They prepare the nutritious and medicinal silkworms in boiling water and give themselves an exfoliation treatment with silk cocoons for anti-ageing purposes.
