Weaving

What is weaving?
Weaving is the plaiting of threads over and under each other. A fabric consists of two different systems of threads. The warp threads are tensioned on the machine; these are the vertical threads of a fabric. The weft threads are fed through the opening between the warp threads; these are the horizontal threads of a fabric.

The machines
There are two different weaving machines in the TextileLab, each used for making a different type of fabric.Jacquard gripper weaving machine On this Jacquard weaving machine continuous patterns can be woven up to a width of 170 cm. It is possible to use eight different yarns in one design. The machine is computer-controlled.

Dobby weaving machine
A dobby weaving machine is capable of selectively raising a number of warp threads in a fixed pattern. This machine is especially suited to weaving small structures. By varying the weft threads, stripes, diamonds and fishbone motifs can be woven.

The design
A design can be provided in different ways. The design can be provided on a diskette or a CD. The digital file is read in and converted by a special computer program.

The material
A professional Yarnbank is under development in the TextileLab, meant for its users. The Yarnbank has various weaving yarns in its collection. These yarns can be provided on order for use in the TextileLab.
