The machine
The tufting machine has a hollow needle which holds the yarn. The needle is placed on the pattern and the fibres are punched through the pattern using air pressure. A small blade cuts the fibres to the correct length. By cutting the fibres at different lengths the result is differing levels in the carpet. It is possible to work with several colours in one carpet or rug.
The design
This can be provided as a drawing or a picture. These are first put onto a photographic slide and then projected onto the fabric and copied. Sometimes the design is drawn directly onto the pattern.
The material
Usually woollen threads are used for tufting. There are 100 different colours available as standard. Variants of these colours can be dyed in our dyeing department. For special threads there is a professional Yarnbank in the TextileLab, meant for the users of the TextileLab. The Yarnbank has various tufting yarns in its collection. These yarns can be provided on order for use in the TextileLab.
